With Dashain approaching, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has started the distribution of small denomination notes. From Ashoj 1 to Ashoj 10, the general public will be able to exchange small notes. Despite recent political turmoil causing some uncertainty in note distribution, the bank’s physical reserves remain largely unaffected, allowing the program to commence on schedule, NRB spokesperson Kiran Pandit stated.
Small denomination notes can be exchanged at the Currency Management Department in Thapathali, as well as at provincial offices in Biratnagar, Janakpur, Birgunj, Pokhara, Siddharthanagar, Nepalgunj, and Dhangadhi. Additionally, various bank and financial institution branches will also provide this service. The bank noted that small notes in high demand during Dashain, including new five-rupee notes, will be available for exchange.
Customers can exchange notes at their respective banks, nearby financial institutions, or NRB offices. This practice of distributing small denomination notes, which began last year, continues this year as well. NRB estimates that distributing small notes instead of new notes will save approximately NPR 1.3 billion annually.
