
Locals in Saptari have taken to the streets in protest after a man was shot dead by police during a crackdown on liquor smuggling last night.
Following the death of 36-year-old Lalu Yadav of Rajgadh Rural Municipality–2, Kamalpur, his relatives and local residents staged a protest by burning tires in front of the District Police Office in Saptari on Wednesday.
The incident occurred during a search operation near the Indian border, where police had received information about large-scale storage and smuggling of liquor. A clash broke out between police and locals during the raid.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Basnet, police were forced to open fire in self-defense after they were surrounded and attacked with stones by the locals.
