Kathmandu – A group led by Sudan Gurung staged a protest in front of the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Sunday midnight, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
The demonstrators expressed strong dissatisfaction with the selection of ministers. Gurung, in particular, condemned the appointment of advocate Om Prakash Aryal as minister, warning that further protests could break out.
Protesters chanted slogans such as “Do not politicize the dead” and declared, “If we return to the streets again, no one will be able to stop us.” One participant alleged that “the leadership of the movement has been hijacked by some colleagues.”
On the same day she assumed office, Prime Minister Karki named Om Prakash Aryal as Minister for Home Affairs as well as Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs; former finance secretary Rameshwor Khanal as Minister for Finance; and Kulman Ghising to oversee three ministries — Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, and Cooperative Development.
According to sources at the President’s Office, the names have already been submitted to President Ram Chandra Paudel, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Monday at Sheetal Niwas.
