A meeting of the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee of the House of Representatives is scheduled to be held today to discuss the School Education Bill. According to the committee, the meeting will take place at 10 AM.
Although there were plans to pass the bill on Asar 22 (early July), differing proposals regarding the demands of the Teachers’ Federation led Education Minister Raghuraj Pant to request additional time to build consensus. The committee had granted a five-day extension, but no meeting had been held since.
Consensus has yet to be reached on key issues in the bill, including the periodic promotion of teachers, management of temporary teachers, and provisions related to Early Childhood Development (ECD). The meeting was called following recent discussions between the Ministry of Education and the Teachers’ Federation.
As per an earlier agreement, the bill was to be passed by Asar 15 (late June), but that deadline has already passed. The Teachers’ Federation had previously staged a 29-day-long educational protest starting on Chaitra 20 (early April) demanding the introduction of a new Education Act.
