
Prakash Rai, 45, of Shakhejung in Ilam Municipality–1, attacked his wife with a khukuri (traditional Nepali knife) before taking his own life on Sunday morning.
According to DSP Sanjiv Bogati, the incident occurred around 10 a.m. when Rai struck his wife, Tikamaya Mukhiya, causing severe injuries to her head and left arm. During a search operation, police later found Rai hanging from a tree near their home.
A police team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Rojan Nembwang from Rakse Police Post rescued the injured Mukhiya and took her to Ilam District Hospital. Due to the seriousness of her condition, she was referred to a hospital in Birtamod, Jhapa, for further treatment. DSP Bogati reported that Mukhiya remains in critical condition and is currently unable to speak.
Police have secured the crime scene and dispatched a five-member team under the command of Sub-Inspector Mohanlal Anga Shrestha from Ilam Mangalbare for further investigation and legal procedures.
