The government has decided to restructure the departmental responsibilities of three key investigative bodies.
According to Information and Communication Minister and government spokesperson Jagdish Kharel, Thursday’s Cabinet meeting approved the Nepal Government (Work Division) Third Amendment Regulation, 2082, placing:
- National Investigation Department (NID) under the Ministry of Home Affairs
- Revenue Investigation Department and Asset Laundering Investigation Department under the Ministry of Finance
Previously, all three agencies operated under the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.
The Cabinet also decided to provide NPR 1 million in financial assistance to each family of citizens killed during the Gen-Ji movement protests on Bhadra 23 and 24. However, families of prisoners or juvenile detainees who died while attempting to escape will not receive this aid.
In addition, each victim’s family will receive NPR 500,000 to cover funeral rites, food, and transportation expenses.
Other decisions include keeping the authority to register and renew online media outlets with the Department of Information and Broadcasting, rather than transferring it to district administration offices. Under the Printing and Publication Act, 2048, the department’s director-general will remain the designated local authority for online registration.
Minister Kharel has been formally designated as the government’s spokesperson and stated that other Cabinet decisions will be announced in detail later.
