After Chief Minister Satish Singh’s government was reduced to a minority with the withdrawal of support from two ruling parties, four parties in Madhesh Province have reached an agreement to form a new government. According to reports, the Nepali Congress will lead the new government under the leadership of provincial parliamentary party leader Krishna Yadav. Following several rounds of discussions, the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Janamat Party, and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) have agreed to form the new coalition.
The parties plan to submit a letter to the provincial head with the signatures of a majority of provincial assembly members once the provincial head returns from Kathmandu. Although it has been agreed that the Nepali Congress will lead the government, the distribution of ministerial portfolios among the coalition partners has not yet been finalized.
Earlier, on the 28th of this month, the Janamat Party recalled its member Satish Singh, who was serving as chief minister, prompting the Nepali Congress to withdraw its support last Wednesday. A majority of 54 assembly members is required to form the government. Under the new equation, the Nepali Congress holds 22 seats, the UML has 24 including the Speaker (excluding one suspended member), the Janamat Party holds 13, and the LSP has 8 (excluding one suspended member)—numbers that provide a clear majority for government formation.
