The hearing on the detention of former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara is set to begin today. On Monday, the Office of the Government Attorney filed a charge sheet against him at the Kathmandu District Court.
The prosecution has demanded a three-year prison sentence and a fine of Rs. 85.5 million against Mahara. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police had arrested him on Sunday from Khumaltar, Lalitpur.
Mahara has been made the sole defendant in a supplementary charge related to the gold smuggling case, in which Chinese national Li Haoxiang had smuggled gold hidden inside electronic cigarettes (“vapes”) on Poush 10, 2079 (December 25, 2022).
The Commission of Inquiry on the Illegal Import of Gold had earlier found Mahara guilty of involvement in the smuggling and recommended the reopening of the case for prosecution.
