
The hearing on whether to detain former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has begun today at the Kathmandu District Court.
On Tuesday, Mahara’s statement was recorded before Judge Harka Bahadur Kshetri, and the detention hearing (thunchek bahas) is starting today.
Mahara has been accused of involvement in the gold smuggling case, where Chinese national Li Ha Song allegedly smuggled gold concealed inside electronic vapes on Poush 10, 2079 BS.
Mahara has denied any investment or involvement in the smuggling incident. The Government Attorney’s Office has filed a case against him under the Organized Crime Prevention Act and the Customs Act, demanding a recovery of NPR 85.5 million.
