The Central Committee meeting of the Nepali Congress is set to take place this afternoon at 1 PM at the party’s central office in Sanepa. The meeting, which began on Tuesday, will resume today.
Before the Central Committee meeting, the Performance Committee will meet in the morning, according to the party. Although it was earlier decided that Wednesday’s meeting would finalize the agenda, Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka only held consultations with leaders from his own faction. Since being elected party president, Sher Bahadur Deuba had not held factional meetings; however, Wednesday’s discussions focused on how to move forward with establishment faction leaders.
The meeting of office bearers and former office bearers meant to finalize the agenda has been repeatedly postponed due to disagreements over the convention schedule.
Currently, a major dispute within the party revolves around whether to hold the regular General Convention within Mangsir (mid-December) or to go for a Special Convention instead. The establishment faction believes that the regular convention can be held as per the time required for the internal election process. They maintain that if the regular convention cannot be conducted by Mangsir, the party must go for a Special Convention.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, leaders supporting the Special Convention handed over 2,488 signatures to Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka, according to Congress leader Gururaj Ghimire. As per the party’s statute, if 40% of convention representatives submit a signed request with a valid reason, a Special General Convention must be called within three months. During the 14th General Convention, the party had a total of 4,743 representatives.
Since President Sher Bahadur Deuba has designated Khadka as the acting president, today’s meeting will be chaired by him.
