Dhanwantari Jayanti and National Health Day are being celebrated across the country today with various programs. This day is observed every year on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi to commemorate the birth of Lord Dhanwantari, known as the founding deity of Ayurveda, the ancient Vedic system of medicine based on natural herbs and healing.
According to the Nepal Panchang Nirnayak Samiti, the Trayodashi Tithi falls this morning, so the festival is being observed today. Various health awareness programs, worship ceremonies, and Ayurvedic activities are being held across Nepal to mark the occasion.
As per Sanatan Hindu scriptures, during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean) carried out by the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) using the serpent Vasuki and Mount Mandarachal, Lord Dhanwantari appeared holding a pot of nectar (Amrit) on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi to cure diseases and bless humanity with health.
Ayurvedic doctors and practitioners consider this day auspicious to take positive vows and begin new initiatives dedicated to public welfare and healing.
The celebration of Dhanwantari Jayanti in Nepal formally began after the establishment of the Ayurveda Campus at Nardevi, Kathmandu. Since then, this day has been recognized as a special occasion in the field of Ayurveda education and healthcare.
