Minister for Education, Science and Technology Mahabir Pun has said that a draft will soon be prepared to reform universities by ending political interference.
Speaking at a press conference organized at the Ministry on Monday, Minister Pun said that discussions held with university chancellors have focused on implementing reform measures through the University Grants Commission (UGC).
“There have been discussions with university chancellors. Deliberations are ongoing under the University Grants Commission on how to make universities more effective,” he said. “There have been suggestions to completely end political influence. We will prepare the draft soon.”
Minister Pun also emphasized the need to end the tradition of having the Prime Minister serve as the Chancellor of universities.
“At present, the Prime Minister holds the position of Chancellor. This practice must be removed and a new structure should be implemented. Further discussions on this matter are underway,” he added.
