The body of Nepali student Bipin Joshi, who was killed in a Hamas attack in Israel, has been brought to Kathmandu.
The aircraft carrying his body landed at Tribhuvan International Airport at 2:30 PM on Monday.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda and senior government officials are scheduled to pay tribute at the airport. Energy Minister Kulman Ghising and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have already arrived at the airport.
After completing necessary formalities at the airport, Joshi’s body will be taken to his home district, Kanchanpur, today. His final rites will be performed in Bhimdatta Municipality as per family tradition.
Joshi, a student from Kanchanpur, had gone to Israel for study purposes. He was taken hostage in the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on the Kibbutz region. His whereabouts had remained unknown since then, until Israeli authorities confirmed his death on October 13, 2024.
During a hostage exchange following a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Hamas handed over his body to Israeli forces.
A DNA test later confirmed the body to be that of Bipin Joshi, after which a forensic examination was conducted. According to the Embassy of Nepal in Israel, the investigation found that he was killed during the abduction.
Before being brought to Nepal, a tribute ceremony was held at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv on Sunday. His coffin was draped with the national flag of Nepal.
