The body of Nepali student Bipin Joshi, who was killed after being taken hostage by the Hamas group in Israel, was brought to Kathmandu on Monday.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki and other high-ranking officials offered heartfelt tributes to Joshi at Tribhuvan International Airport, where his coffin was draped with the national flag.
The Prime Minister, ministers, and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs arrived at the airport to pay their last respects.
According to family sources, after completing the necessary formalities at the airport, Joshi’s body will be taken today to his residence in Bhimdatta Municipality, Kanchanpur. His final rites will be performed in his home district.
Joshi was studying Agricultural Science at Sudurpaschim University and had gone to Israel under the “Learn and Earn” program. He was taken hostage on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked the Kibbutz area in southern Israel.
He had remained missing for a long time until Israeli authorities confirmed his death on October 13, 2024.
As part of a hostage exchange following the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Hamas handed over Joshi’s body to the Israeli army.
A DNA test later confirmed that the body was his.
According to the Embassy of Nepal in Israel, forensic examination revealed that he was killed during the abduction.
Before being brought to Nepal, tribute ceremonies were held for Joshi on Sunday in Tel Aviv and at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel.
