The BP Highway, which had been blocked for three days due to landslides and rockfalls, has reopened for traffic.
Various sections of the highway, particularly the Choukidanda–Nepalthok stretch in Kavrepalanchok, were obstructed by landslides and debris. The Division Road Office in Bhaktapur cleared the obstruction and created a 50-meter diversion at Roshi Rural Municipality-8, allowing vehicles to resume movement, according to Senior Divisional Engineer Suman Yogesh.
Engineer Yogesh noted that dry landslides in areas such as Mamti in Roshi-12 continued to pose challenges, preventing complete clearance on Saturday. Continuous rainfall since November 13 had triggered landslides and rockfalls along multiple sections, fully blocking the highway.
Previously, landslides during last year’s monsoon had damaged eight kilometers of the highway from Choukidanda in Kavrepalanchok to Barkhekhola in Sindhuli. Temporary roads had been established to allow one-way or two-way traffic in affected areas.
The BP Highway, a key route connecting eastern Nepal, suffered the most damage along 34 km from Khurkot in Sindhuli to Nepalthok and 50 km from Nepalthok to Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchok. The office has initiated contracts for permanent reconstruction in four sections. Thousands of vehicles use this highway daily, making it an essential transport artery.
