Two people, including a foreign climber, have died after being hit by an avalanche near the base camp of Yalung Ri Peak in the Rolwaling region, located in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality–9.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gyan Kumar Mahato, a group of 15 foreign climbers along with Nepali guides was struck by the avalanche around 9:00 a.m. this morning near Yalung Ri. The condition of the rest of the group is still unknown.
Ward Chairperson Nimgeli Sherpa said that despite repeated requests for rescue operations since early morning, the response was delayed. He added that the rescue process was further complicated because Rolwaling is a restricted area, and administrative approval for helicopter flights took time.
Police said that efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the missing climbers. Although helicopters have been dispatched to the site, poor weather conditions have prevented them from reaching the area.
Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force personnel are on their way to the incident site for rescue operations.
