The Election Commission has decided that Ranjita Shrestha will remain the Chairperson of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP).
Although the party’s national convention had registered lawmaker Lalbir Chaudhary as the new chairperson, the commission did not recognize Chaudhary, thereby confirming Shrestha as the official leader.
Commission spokesperson Nita Pokharel Aryal stated today that the decision was made because, under the Political Parties Act and the NUP’s constitution, the national convention was deemed invalid.
Earlier, a faction led by party patron Resham Chaudhary had removed Shrestha from the chairmanship — and even from general membership — through a central committee meeting attended by a majority of its members.
