Netra Bikram Chand ‘Viplav’, general secretary of the Nepal Communist Party, expressed satisfaction that the Gen Z uprising toppled what he called an “arrogant” government.
Speaking at a warning rally in Kathmandu on Thursday, Viplav thanked those who, he said, accomplished what even the Maoist people’s war and the unified communist movement could not.
“I want to thank those who toppled the arrogant power and the parliamentary rule of brokers. Our voice was not only ignored — Nepal’s parliament was used to serve the interests of brokers. This is a betrayal of the nation that will never be erased from history,” he said. “Corruption exists from the ward level upward. The government handed out contracts and engaged in looting. We could not stop it. The government used the state, power and force to crush dissent. The Gen Z explosion occurred, and as a result the arrogant government fell.”
Viplav expressed anger that those who shed blood in the people’s war were treated with disrespect. He argued that while the constitution declares a republic, it did not become a constitution of the people. He said that when they raised their voices against corruption and maladministration, the then-communist government led by K.P. Sharma Oli imposed bans on them.
“They began doing anything for the perks of power. We were the first to fight to complete the constitution. We fought to secure rights for indigenous peoples, Madhesis, and women. For raising the voice of justice, the communist government and parties punished us with a two-year ban,” he said.
