Nepali Congress leader Mohammad Aftab Alam has passed away. He died at 2:58 AM on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC).
SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, confirmed his death. The 63-year-old Alam had been on a ventilator before he passed away. His body has been taken to Rajpur, Rautahat, for the final rites.
Alam had been admitted to the hospital after suffering heart-related complications. He had also suffered a brain stroke soon after being released from Nakkhu Prison in Jestha (May/June).
Alam had been accused of burning alive the injured victims of a bomb explosion during the preparations for the 2008 Constituent Assembly elections. The Rautahat District Court had convicted him and sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, the High Court later overturned the verdict, acquitting Alam and all other defendants, stating that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the incident occurred or that Alam was involved.
A petition against the High Court’s decision has already been filed at the Supreme Court, and the final verdict is still pending.
