Arsenal, the current leaders of the English Premier League, were held to a 2–2 draw by newly promoted Sunderland. The home side delivered an impressive performance, denying Arsenal a vital victory in the closing moments of the match.
Daniel Ballard opened the scoring for Sunderland in the 36th minute, giving his team a 1–0 lead. Following the goal, Arsenal came under pressure throughout the remainder of the first half.
