The Election Commission of Nepal has held consultations with its former office bearers and former secretaries in preparation for the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives and the National Assembly.
The meeting, held today at the Commission’s central office in Kantipath, aimed to draw from past experiences to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a free, fair, fearless, transparent, and cost-effective manner.
As per the spirit of the Gen Z movement, an interim electoral government has been formed, and the House of Representatives election is scheduled for March 5 (Fagun 21), while the National Assembly election for 19 seats will be held on January 25 (Magh 11).
The consultation meeting was chaired by Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari and attended by Commissioners Sagun Shamsher Jabara and Dr. Janaki Tuladhar, along with former Chief Election Commissioners Surya Prasad Shrestha, Nilkantha Upreti, and Dolakh Bahadur Gurung, as well as former secretaries Madhu Regmi, Bharat Mani Subedi, Suresh Adhikari, and Ravi Raj Pant, among others.
At the start of the meeting, Election Commission Secretary Mahadev Panth said the consultation was organized to exchange experiences from previous elections and to discuss challenges faced during election management. He informed that vacant posts across all Commission offices have already been filled and that meetings are being held with security agencies to coordinate election security.
“Experience sharing provides inspiration for improving election management and advancing innovative ideas,” Panth said, adding, “The upcoming election is not only a constitutional duty but also the foundation of democratic practice.”
Currently, 125 political parties are registered with the Commission, and a few more are in the process of registration. Three new parties have been registered in the current fiscal year. The discussion also focused on creating a favorable environment for the elections and ensuring the effective implementation of the election code of conduct.
