An impeachment motion has been filed against Ram Chandra Mandal, Speaker of the Madhes Province Assembly. A total of 64 lawmakers from seven parties registered the proposal, accusing the Speaker of acting against the dignity and conduct of his office.
The parties supporting the impeachment motion include Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LOSAPA), Nepali Congress, CPN (Unified Socialist), Nagarik Unmukti Party, Janamat Party, and CPN (Maoist Centre).
The lawmakers have demanded Mandal’s removal, stating that he failed to operate the assembly in accordance with the Provincial Assembly Regulations, 2075. The proposal alleges that the Speaker repeatedly conducted assembly sessions under the influence of a single party and even proceeded with meetings in the absence of opposition members.
A few days earlier, during the assembly meeting called for former Chief Minister Jitendra Sonal to seek a vote of confidence, the Speaker continued the session despite Sonal and members of his cabinet being absent. Following the controversy, outgoing Chief Minister Sonal announced his resignation during the same assembly meeting.
