Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwaprakash Sharma has warned that he will resign from his post if the party does not hold its General Convention before the March 5 (Fagun 21) elections.
During a meeting with party President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Sunday, Sharma said he would step down if the issue of the special general convention is not addressed.
Deuba, who recently returned after 18 days of medical treatment in Singapore, has been holding informal discussions with party leaders since Friday to resolve internal disputes. As part of this initiative, he held a one-hour discussion with Sharma on Sunday.
In the meeting, Sharma informed Deuba that 54% of the convention representatives have submitted signatures demanding a special general convention. He clearly stated that if the party fails to hold the convention within the month of Poush, he would not continue in his position.
According to a source familiar with the discussion, Sharma said:
“To address the demand for a special general convention, the party must either conduct the regular convention on time or hold the special convention. If the regular convention can be held on schedule, the demand will naturally be addressed. But if it cannot be completed in time, the special convention must be held within the timeframe fixed by the party statute.”
The source added that Sharma made it clear he would not remain a witness to actions that go against the party statute. In simple terms, he said he would resign as General Secretary if the decision is not made in time.
However, party President Deuba stressed that there is no alternative but to listen to everyone’s views and move ahead collectively within the party.
