A clash broke out between Nepali Congress UML leaders and activists and Gen-Z protesters in Simara, Bara, creating tension around the Simara Airport area. Gen-Z demonstrators reportedly damaged the airport gate, prompting the deployment of a large police force, according to DSP Bijayraj Pandit of the Bara District Police Office.
The clash occurred during a Madhesh Province-level youth gathering organized by UML in Parwanipur, Bara on Wednesday. Key leaders including UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel and Politburo member Mahesh Basnet, in charge of the Youth Association, were arriving in Simara as chief guests for the program.
After learning about the youth gathering, some local youths called for a Gen-Z demonstration to disrupt the event. From early morning, groups of youths began assembling in Simara.
Tensions escalated when UML leaders traveling from Kathmandu to welcome the arriving leaders engaged in a verbal dispute with local youths. During the confrontation, one UML leader reportedly slapped a young protester, which further aggravated the situation.
Angry youths then reached the airport and started vandalizing the area. The situation remains tense, and leaders expected from Kathmandu have been stopped. Senior UML leaders, including former MPs Kishan Shrestha, Achyut Mainali, and Jwala Sah, are currently inside the airport premises.
