Excessive levels of harmful pesticides have been detected in green coriander and cucumbers. A pesticide residue test conducted by the Central Agricultural Laboratory Unit on Thursday at the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Committee revealed that both vegetables contained pesticide levels unsafe for consumption.
According to the test report, green coriander supplied by Bhaktapur farmer Swasthani K.C. contained 55.29% organophosphate pesticide, while cucumbers brought by Nawalparasi farmer Kalpana Chaulagai had 46.5% organophosphate residue.
As per standards, fruits or vegetables are considered safe for consumption only if the combined amount of organophosphate and carbamate pesticides is below 35%.
- If the level is 45% or higher, the produce must be destroyed.
- If the residue level falls between 35% and 45%, the items may be stored for a few days before consumption.
Both the tested coriander and cucumbers exceed safe limits, raising concerns about consumer health and market monitoring.
