Two youths who attacked CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet in Biratnagar by throwing a balloon filled with red ink have been found to be affiliated with the student wing of the Nepali Congress.
Among those arrested, 25-year-old Sanjog Gautam is the unit president of the Nepal Student Union (NSU) at Mahendra Morang Campus in Biratnagar. He is also a municipal member of the party.
Similarly, the other arrested youth, 19-year-old Arpit Kunwar, is also an NSU student leader. He had participated in the Gen-Z youth campaign on August 23 and 24 and had come to Kathmandu as part of the negotiation team with the government. However, after his affiliation with the party’s student wing became public, he could not continue as a member of the team.
Basnet, along with former minister Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, had arrived in Biratnagar in the morning to attend a program in Itahari. Despite tightened security after their arrival, the youths managed to throw a balloon filled with red ink outside the airport gate.
The balloon hit the windshield of the vehicle (Ba 17 Cha 5961) in which Basnet was traveling. Police have arrested and taken both individuals into custody.
