Special convention supporters within the Nepali Congress have called a gathering today at 1 PM at the Rastriya Sabha Griha in Exhibition Road. The event is being organized to pressure the Central Working Committee to set a date for the special general convention. Around 54 percent of general convention delegates who signed the demand are expected to participate.
The party’s Central Committee meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, while debates continue over whether to hold the regular 15th General Convention before or after the upcoming House of Representatives election.
General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma’s faction has maintained that the convention should be held before the election or, if not possible, a special convention must be conducted. However, party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s faction has argued that holding the convention before the election is not feasible.
On Ashoj 29, 54 percent of delegates had already submitted a memorandum with signatures demanding a special convention. Today’s gathering will be led by Guru Raj Ghimire, while Thapa and Sharma are not expected to attend.
The gathering will be addressed by leaders including Narahari Acharya, Mahesh Acharya, Taranath Ranabhat, and Baldev Sharma Majgainya, among others.
