A devastating fire at a multi-building complex in Tai Po, Hong Kong, has left at least 44 people dead. The blaze spread across seven buildings, according to local reports.
The fire broke out in the 32-storey Wang Cheong House of the Wang Fuk Court residential complex, which was undergoing maintenance. Many residents were trapped inside the building, and at least 279 people are still reported missing.
The Fire Services Department deployed 128 fire engines, 57 ambulances, and around 888 rescue personnel to control the blaze. Early investigations suggest the fire may have spread from bamboo scaffolding outside the building.
Wang Fuk Court houses more than 4,000 residents, most of whom are elderly people aged over 65. Tai Po lies in the northern part of Hong Kong, near the border with Shenzhen, China.
The incident is considered one of the most severe residential fires Hong Kong has experienced in recent years.
