The Abuwa–Birdi–Sera–Pauwatar road, considered an important rural infrastructure in Gorkha, has seen only 30% progress as the contract deadline approaches. Despite an agreement signed three years ago, the contractor has failed to accelerate work, leaving the blacktopping task largely incomplete.
The Rural Road Network Improvement Project Unit, Pokhara, had signed a contract worth Rs. 30 crore 61 lakh with Amar VBBPL JV Construction on Chaitra 17, 2079, to complete road blacktopping by Chaitra 13, 2082. However, the project office stated that progress has remained slow due to delays from the construction company.
Although some portions of the road have been gravelled, essential pre-construction tasks are still pending. Repairs of drainage systems, turn improvements, and other required works have not progressed, according to the project’s information officer, Deepak Baral.
Basharaj Pandey, Ward Chair of Palungtar Municipality-9, expressed frustration, saying, “Local residents and representatives repeatedly requested and urged the contractor to continue the work, but no progress has been made. How can the country develop like this? Why has no action been taken against the contractor?”
Residents of Birdi, still waiting for the road to be blacktopped even as the deadline nears, voiced their disappointment. They noted that the poor road condition poses high risks during the monsoon, affecting patients, students, and farmers transporting agricultural products.
Palungtar Municipality Mayor Bibash Chintan stated that the lack of progress despite nearing the project deadline reflects serious negligence by both the contractor and government authorities. He added that the municipality has requested the concerned office to cancel the contract following legal procedures and move forward with an alternative process.
