Leaders close to Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba have urged him not to hold the party’s general convention before the upcoming elections.
On Thursday, President Deuba called his close leaders to his temporary residence in Maharajgunj for discussions. During the meeting, the leaders advised that the party should not conduct its general convention ahead of the House of Representatives election scheduled for 21 Falgun.
After the discussion, party spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat said they raised the issue with Deuba, stating that holding the regular general convention before the election would harm the party.
Quoting Deuba, Mahat said, “Whatever the case, he told us to move forward by reaching an agreement to solve the current problems.”
Within the Nepali Congress, there is ongoing debate on whether to hold a regular general convention or a special general convention. General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma, among other leaders, have demanded that the party hold either the regular or special general convention within the month of Poush.
