Madhesh Province Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav has resigned before taking the vote of confidence.
Addressing the assembly, CM Yadav announced his resignation directly from the rostrum during the session convened for the confidence vote.
As members from UML, Federal Socialist Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party, along with other party representatives, left the assembly during his speech, it became evident that he would not secure the confidence vote, prompting his resignation.
Following Article 168, Clause 3 of the Constitution, the then Governor of the Province, Sumitra Subedi Bhandari, had appointed Yadav on Kartik 23. Subsequently, 74 provincial assembly members from seven parties had filed a writ in the Supreme Court, challenging the appointment as unconstitutional.
Hearing the writ, the Supreme Court on Mangsir 15 issued a directive ordering CM Yadav to obtain a vote of confidence within 24 hours.
In line with this directive, a Madhesh Provincial Assembly session was called on Wednesday for the confidence vote.
After failing to secure the vote, the path is now open to reform the government in the province according to Article 168, Clause 2 of the Constitution, as per the Supreme Court’s directive.
