Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Chandra Prasad Dhakal has said that Nepal’s economy will not gain momentum unless the government and the private sector move forward together. He made these remarks at the 16th Annual General Assembly of the Nepal Forum of Economic Journalists (NAFEJ).
Speaking at the event, Dhakal emphasized, “Until we take the private sector along, Nepal’s economy cannot move forward. This has already been proven.” He stressed the need to change the way the private sector is perceived and highlighted that Nepal has fallen behind on important economic agendas, calling for immediate attention.
He expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of a collective approach, saying Nepal cannot achieve the results it seeks without it. Dhakal pointed out that FNCCI has been working to counter the widespread belief that “nothing can be done in Nepal.”
“A lot can be achieved by mobilizing internal capital. The private sector has proven that progress is possible in Nepal, countering the message that nothing can be done here,” he added.
Dhakal also said that the private sector has been demanding good governance, in line with the concerns raised during the GenZ movement. Some of the issues raised by the private sector have already been addressed or are in the process of being resolved, which he said has encouraged the business community.
Criticizing management practices, he noted that in many institutions, decision-making power lies solely with the CEO.
“If the CEO wants something, they can persuade the chairperson to pass it. But if they don’t want it, they won’t pass anything. This kind of behavior exists everywhere,” Dhakal remarked.
He further informed that FNCCI has been carrying out various activities both within Nepal and abroad to promote investment in the country.
