A fire broke out in Chunikhel Naya Basti of Budhanilkantha Municipality–13, Kathmandu, displacing dozens of residents. Seven people were safely rescued from the site.
The fire started at around 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday night and was brought under control by about 1:15 a.m. with the help of fire engines from Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Budhanilkantha Municipality, and Tokha Municipality.
According to Ward Chairperson Tika Narayan Shrestha, a long row of makeshift structures equivalent to 24 rooms was completely destroyed in the fire. The settlement was home to 24 tenant families from different districts, all of whom have been displaced by the incident.
The displaced families have been temporarily accommodated in nearby shelters. Preparations are underway to provide them with relief materials, including food, clothing, and other essentials.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. However, the full details of the damage and losses are yet to be determined.
