Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa Announces Candidacy for Party President
Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has officially announced his candidacy for the position of party president in the upcoming 15th General Convention.
Speaking at a press conference in Malangwa, Sarlahi, Thapa stated that he will contest for the presidency with a vision of “new policies and a new message.” He added that he is currently holding discussions with party colleagues and will soon begin a nationwide campaign for leadership selection.
Thapa emphasized that the party must head to the General Convention before the February 21 (Falgun 21) House of Representatives election. He said valuable time had already been lost in internal debates and discussions, and the party must quickly conclude its convention to prepare effectively for the election.
On another note, Thapa expressed confidence that all political parties will participate in the February 21 election. He stressed the need to conduct the election to prevent further harm to the constitution, reaffirming the Nepali Congress’ full commitment to the scheduled polls.
Thapa also pointed out security challenges ahead of the election, mentioning fugitive prisoners and stolen weapons following the Jen Z Movement. He warned that these could pose criminal risks during the polls and urged the government to take timely action. He said the issue had already been raised during the all-party meeting called by the Prime Minister.
