A tragic road accident in the Gulariya area of Bardiya on Sunday morning has once again raised concerns over emergency vehicle operation and road safety in Nepal.
According to police, 55-year-old yoga instructor Bhumi Raj Lamichhane and his 9-year-old grandson Rihans Kharel of Gulariya Municipality–5 were killed after being hit by an ambulance while they were on their way to an Ayurvedic hospital for a yoga session. The incident has created a heartbreaking situation for the family, losing two generations at once.
In the same incident, Lamichhane’s wife, 50-year-old Sita Lamichhane, and 65-year-old Surya Upadhyay were injured. They are currently receiving treatment in Nepalgunj.
Preliminary reports state that the accident occurred around 5:15 AM when the pedestrians were crossing the road and were struck by an ambulance traveling from Kohalpur, Banke to Rajapur. The ambulance was operated by the Srijanshil Tole Development Institution, and only the driver was inside at the time of the accident, police said. The driver has been taken into custody and an investigation is underway.
