Nepali Congress leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has said that he stands firmly in favour of party unity and is conscious of preventing any split within the party.
Issuing a video message on Sunday amid the inauguration of the special general convention called by the pro–special convention faction of the Nepali Congress, Dr Koirala clarified that he is not driven by any personal interest within the party. He said he does not wish to move forward in the party’s transformation campaign with anger or impatience.
“I want to state clearly that I have no personal ambition. I was never attracted by the lure of becoming a minister or general secretary in the past. Such opportunities came, but I did not show interest. Likewise, the prospect of becoming party president or prime minister does not tempt me,” he said.
Dr Koirala said he has been raising a calm and principled voice in favour of overall party unity, inspired by his family’s philosophy of life. He also informed that, while the campaign for the special general convention was underway, he had presented his views in writing to the party’s Central Working Committee.
Stating that general convention representatives are the true assets of the party, Dr Koirala said they have come to Kathmandu with the noble objective of strengthening the effectiveness of party procedures and reaffirming the relevance of party policies.
