The first edition of the ‘Elite Cup’ Cricket Tournament will be held in Biratnagar. Organized jointly by the Koshi Provincial Cricket Association and the Nepal Cricket Foundation, the tournament will take place from Magh 14 to 17 at the Marileban Cricket Ground in Biratnagar-6, organizers informed during a press conference.
Teams from Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari will participate in the competition. According to Koshi Provincial Cricket Association President Sarbajit Pandey, Morang will face Sunsari on Magh 14, Jhapa will play Morang on Magh 15, and Sunsari will compete against Jhapa on Magh 16. The final match of the tournament will be held on Magh 17.
Pandey said the tournament will feature three teams that performed best from Koshi Province in the Prime Minister Cup Cricket. He added that efforts will be made to include the Elite Cup in the annual calendar of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) in the future. The tournament is also expected to help revive the declining status of cricket in Koshi Province.
Speaking at the press conference, Morang Cricket Association President Mo Sadbabu and Sunsari Cricket Association President Chetanath Poudel said hosting the Elite Cup is a matter of pride and stressed the need to continue it on a long-term basis.
Meanwhile, Nepal Cricket Foundation Director Abhishek Shrestha said that the agreement between the Koshi Provincial Cricket Association and the Nepal Cricket Foundation for the promotion of cricket will contribute significantly to grassroots cricket development.
