The Kagbeni–Muktinath road, which had been obstructed since Wednesday due to heavy snowfall, has reopened from this morning. The road was brought back into operation through the joint efforts of the District Administration Office and the Waragung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality.
The 12-kilometer blacktopped road leading to Muktinath was completely blocked after heavy snowfall on Tuesday night. From Thursday afternoon, excavators from the Muktinath (Jomsom–Korala) Road Project were mobilized at the request of the district administration and the rural municipality to clear the snow.
In addition, a joint security team comprising the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police, led by Chief District Officer Ajita Sharma, was deployed to help reopen the road. Local representatives, including Rural Municipality Vice-Chairperson Diki Gurung and Ward Chairperson Karmaghyacho Gurung, were also actively involved in the operation.
According to District Police Office Information Officer Inspector Santosh Basyal, the road was reopened by clearing accumulated snow using heavy machinery from the Korala Road Project, with coordination from the district security committee and local representatives.
Although the road has reopened, Inspector Basyal warned that snow has hardened like ice in some shaded and damp sections, creating difficulties particularly for two-wheelers and heavy vehicles while ascending toward Muktinath. As a precaution, the District Police Office has requested vehicles to operate on the route only after 11 a.m., as travel during early morning hours may still be risky.
With the reopening of the road, vehicles that had been stranded in Kagbeni since Wednesday have resumed their journeys toward their destinations. Ward Chairperson Karmaghyacho Gurung of Waragung Muktikshetra–4 stated that if there is no further snowfall, road conditions are expected to improve significantly in the coming days.
