The suspect involved in the rape and murder of 13-year-old Anshu Gautam from Letang Municipality-2, Schoolchowk, Morang, has been arrested. After an extensive and prolonged investigation, police identified and detained 55-year-old Padam Bahadur Adhikari, a neighbor of the victim. Police will publicly present the accused at a press conference today (Sunday) at 11 AM.
What Happened?
Anshu went missing from a swing near her home on the evening of 21 Asoj.
Eighteen days later, her severely decomposed body was discovered inside the Belbari–Chisang community forest. Her body and head were found separated, and she was unclothed. Family members identified her from the clothes found at the scene, and DNA testing later confirmed the identity.
After the body was found, police intensified the investigation.
Investigation and Challenges
Initial suspicion suggested rape and murder, but the absence of solid evidence made the investigation difficult. However, sustained efforts eventually led police to the suspect.
Key points from the investigation:
- Anshu did not carry a mobile phone.
- She was last seen around 5:30 PM near the swing.
- Locals searched for her that night, and her family reported her missing.
- Eighteen days later, firewood collectors found her decomposed body in the forest.
- The body’s condition complicated postmortem analysis, and the family has refused to accept the body until justice is served. It has remained at BP Koirala Institute in Dharan for 13 days.
The Suspect
Adhikari, aged around 52–55, was actively involved in Anshu’s search after she went missing—leading the search team at times, according to locals. Many were shocked because he is a father and grandfather.
After the body was found, Adhikari fled to India. Police contacted him repeatedly and eventually lured him back to Nepal by asking for his help as a neighbor. Once he entered Nepal, he was arrested.
Why the Case Was Complex
- The body was severely decomposed.
- The head was separated from the body, increasing suspicion of weapon use.
- Police also considered possible wild animal involvement due to scattered body parts.
- The investigation included analysis of mobile tower signals, inquiries into visitors to the area, and repeated questioning of family, teachers, classmates, and neighbors.
Police Efforts
A large team worked on the case including:
- SP Kavita Katuwal
- DSP Kopila Chudal
- Inspector Saroj Khanal (who stayed in Letang throughout the investigation)
- DSP-led team from Province Police Office
- A team from Nepal Police’s Central Investigation Bureau (CIB)
CIB’s involvement and combined efforts finally helped trace the suspect.
About the Victim
Anshu was a Grade 5 student at Laxmi Secondary School.
Police noted that she had experienced her first menstruation about 12–13 days before her disappearance, and due to cultural restrictions during this period, she was emotionally sensitive.
Current Situation
- 45 days have passed since her body was found.
- 62 days have passed since she went missing.
- The suspect will be officially presented today.
- The investigation is still ongoing.
- Locals fear this case may face delays or complications similar to the Nirmala Pant case.
Police say they are close to reaching a final conclusion, and further details will be revealed after the press conference.
