More than 500 people have been killed in Iran during protests that have continued for the past two weeks. The deaths include 490 protesters and 48 security personnel. In addition, more than 10,600 people have been arrested during the demonstrations.
The protests began on December 28 against rising prices but have since escalated into a major movement against the Islamic Republic. Authorities have imposed internet restrictions, which has disrupted the flow of information.
State television has declared the deceased security personnel as martyrs and announced three days of national mourning, while labeling the protesters as terrorists. The ongoing unrest is described as the largest wave of protests since 2022 and is being seen as a serious challenge to the rule of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
