UML Vice President Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ has said that there is no alternative to KP Sharma Oli in the current political context within the party.
Speaking at a press conference organized by Press Chautari on Friday, Badal stressed that the upcoming general convention should be a unifying event for the party. He argued that searching for an alternative leadership to Oli at this time would be inappropriate.
He credited Oli for establishing UML as a major force in the leftist movement and transforming it into a popular party. Badal emphasized that both the country and the UML still need Oli’s leadership. According to him, internal competition in the general convention could push the party toward division and dissolution.
He added that the party chair has already instructed leaders to ensure the general convention becomes a platform for unity. Badal said the leadership selection should happen through consensus, even if it requires amending the party statute.
“The statute convention has already given a message for Oli’s leadership continuity,” Badal said. “Following that mandate, the 11th General Convention must select its leadership accordingly. Going against party unity in the name of competition is wrong. The public and the party cadres also want Oli’s leadership.”
Badal also asserted that he has an important role to play in the current political moment. “I also wish to have a place within the continuation of Oli’s leadership,” he said. “It is necessary for strengthening unity and moving UML forward.”
He further claimed that there is a plan to politically finish KP Oli through court cases, and similar attempts may be made against leaders of the Nepali Congress and the Maoist Centre. Badal warned that such actions pose a threat to Nepal’s national integrity and sovereignty.
