Vote counting has begun in the election held to select the new leadership of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) through its 11th National General Convention.
According to the convention secretariat, counting started after chips were removed from all 80 electronic voting machines used in the election and formal verification documents were signed.
Voting for the new leadership began at 9:12 am on Wednesday. A total of around 642 candidates contested for 301 positions in the party’s Central Committee. The voting process was conducted using 80 electronic voting machines.
In the race for the party’s top leadership, incumbent chairman KP Sharma Oli and senior vice-chairman Ishwar Pokhrel are competing with their respective panels. Candidates not included in either panel have also contested independently.
The results of the vote counting are expected to determine the UML’s future leadership and political direction.
